Randy launched his illustration career in the late ’80s, quickly establishing a strong reputation for highly detailed representational drawing and painting. Although adept at working in color, he gravitated toward and has always preferred a simple black and white palette utilizing graphite, watercolor and pen & ink. A master of stippling, Randy uses the technique’s precision to create images that remain crisp across both traditional print and digital media.
Perhaps best known commercially as a portrait artist, Randy has an exceptional aptitude for capturing his subject’s character and essence with carefully nuanced accuracy. This, combined with his stippling expertise, made him a perfect match for The Wall Street Journal’s iconic portraits known as “hedcuts”; he’s created several hundred of them since 1998.
All of Randy’s illustration work is hand-crafted.
